Ali says: There’s a piece for 5 viols called ‘A Knell of Johnson’ by the Elizabethan composer Robert Johnson. It gets its name from a little motif that rings all the way through the piece. It passes between the parts so the same person never plays it twice in a row, but it never goes away! I've marked it on the score on the right, and you can hear the American viol consort Parthenia playing it here:
